Q: I have not been receiving my print issue of JAAD/ I would like to change my address for JAAD/ I would like to cancel my issue subscription/ I would like to opt in [opt out] of the print issue/ etc.
A: This is handled in our AAD Member Resource Center. They can be reached either by phone (866) 508-7546 or by email: mrc@aad.org.
Q: A reviewer told me that I can have an additional reference and/or figure but my manuscript was still sent back. What should I do?
A: Sometimes reviewers explicitly or implicitly imply that an author can go over the figure/table, reference count, or word limit. However, for JAAD in particular, authors must stay within these limits. We encourage authors to state that they cannot exceed the requirements in their responses to the reviewer comments. Supplemental material may be added to address feedback from reviewers and add more material.
Q: Would X be a good topic for an article?
A: Generally due to the high volume of manuscripts received by JAAD, the editors are not able to respond to pre-submission inquiries. To have your work evaluated for suitableness to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, please submit it through the online submission and review system https://www.editorialmanager.com/jaad/default1.aspx. Also, our Guide for Authors is at https://www.jaad.org/content/auth_page.
There are exceptions to this rule:
From the Academy articles require that a proposal be submitted first - https://americanacademyofdermatology.wufoo.com/forms/zaemnoj0do0rgv/
CME articles. To have manuscripts considered for publication in JAAD as certified CME activities, authors must first complete and submit proposal worksheets and manuscript outlines for approval by the CME Planning Workgroup and Deputy Editor (available here). The CME must have a Part I and a Part II, each with its own proposal form and outline. Each part must also have separate and distinct learning objectives. To obtain approval from the CME Planning Workgroup, send all four files (Proposal Part I, Outline Part I, Proposal Part II, and Outline Part II) to jaad@aad.org for review.
Clinical reviews require a one-page proposal to be submitted to the journal before submission in order to determine interest. The proposal form is available here.
Controversies. These articles are submitted as a pair of commentaries focused on controversial scientific and medical issues in dermatology, rather than political ones. A single editor will handle the pair. Authors on the opposing articles should not be the same, but a group of authors may divide the topic and write opposing sides. Articles about non-medical topics without relevance to the clinical practice of dermatology will not be considered. Each manuscript is limited to 500 words, 2 images, and 5 references.
Prior to potential submission into Editorial Manager, authors must submit a set of proposal forms (one for each side) for review by the JAAD Controversies Special Editor and their workgroup. The proposal form is available here. The outline and information contained on each form should be pertinent to that side of the argument only. Completed proposal forms should be emailed to jaad@aad.org.
Q: Does JAAD accept Video Abstracts?
A: No, JAAD does not accept video abstracts. However, if you’d like to submit a video with your manuscript, this can be done in the same way as a figure or table by referring to the video or animation content and noting in the body text where it should be placed. In order to ensure that your video or animation material is directly usable, please provide the video file in one of our recommended file formats with a preferred maximum size of 150 MB per file, 1 GB in total. For more detailed instructions please review the Video section in the JAAD Author Guide. Videos must be included at initial submission, so they can be reviewed. They cannot be added after acceptance.
Q: Does JAAD accept Plain Language Summaries?
A: Yes, as supplemental material only. If the authors wish to include a plain language summary with their article, it must be included at the time of submission and cannot be added after acceptance. Plain language summaries will be posted as supplemental material on Mendeley; there is no word limit. Figures and tables are allowed.
Plain language summaries are not accepted as standalone submissions, they must be connected to an article.
Q: Cannot find manuscript in Editorial Manager
A: There may be duplicate accounts connected to your name/email. Please email the JAAD Editorial Office with any questions and they will be able to assist.
Please note, only the corresponding/submitting author will see the manuscript listed in their author dashboard. Co-authors will not have access to the manuscript in Editorial Manager.
Q: Corresponding author vs. lead author
A: There can only be one corresponding/submitting author assigned to a manuscript in Editorial Manager, but this does not need to be the lead author.
If there is more than one lead author, please add a footnote in the manuscript stating that the co-lead authors contributed equally to the submission.
Please note, only the corresponding/submitting author will see the manuscript listed in their author dashboard. Co-authors will not have access to the manuscript in Editorial Manager.
The submitting author does not need to be the corresponding author and this can be changed in the Editorial Manager system when additional authors are added. This can be done by ticking the box labeled "Make Corresponding Author".
Q: Where is the proofing link for my accepted article?
A: The proofing link usually goes to the corresponding author within 2-4 weeks depending on production workload. Once the article is in this stage of production, our publisher, Elsevier, tracks that information and handles the typesetting/formatting for print.
The corresponding author is the first point of contact regarding a proofing link from the publisher. If they have not received it after 2-4 weeks, please email the JAAD Editorial Office with your manuscript ID and relevant information.
Q: What is the JAAD Impact Factor?
A: JAAD's Impact Factor and other journal metrics can be accessed at https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-the-american-academy-of-dermatology/about/insights
Q: What is the JAAD International Impact Factor?

The Journal is expected to receive its first Impact Factor in 2025. The journal’s current CiteScore is available here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/jaad-international/about/insights

A: JDCR does currently not have an Impact Factor; however the journal has a CiteScore, available here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/jaad-case-reports/about/insights
Q: What is the JAAD Reviews Impact Factor?
A: JAAD Reviews launched in April 2024 and, as such, will not be assigned an impact factor for several years. The journal's cite score will be provided prior to an impact factor, but it has not been determined yet.
Q: Are patient consent forms required?
A: Consent forms should be retained by the author's institution(s) in perpetuity; they should not be uploaded to Editorial Manager.
Studies on patients or volunteers require ethics committee approval and informed consent, which should be documented in the paper. Appropriate consents, permissions and releases must be obtained where an author wishes to include case details or other personal information or images of patients and any other individuals in an Elsevier publication.
Q: Are there exceptions to word/figure limits?
A: Figure/image limits: Please see the article table with limits listed in the Author Guidelines. The editor is strict on these limits and does not allow exceptions. Additional material can be provided as supplemental material, clearly marked as such. If accepted, this material will be published on Mendeley.
Word limits: We ask that all authors stay within the word limit listed in the JAAD Author Guidelines (https://www.jaad.org/content/authorinfo). The editor is strict on these limits and does not allow exceptions. We appreciate the time that it takes to write within the word limit, and we look forward to receiving your manuscript.
Q: What are the guidelines for tables in articles?
A: Tables must be 35 lines or less in portrait layout, have 1-inch margins and be 10-12-point font to meet the requirement of fitting on one journal page. More information can be found in the Guide for Authors.
Q: How can I share my article on social media?
A: If you are posting about your article on social media, we suggest posting during the week and tagging/adding JAAD Journals as a collaborator for more exposure. Your post can be shared as a story through JAAD social media and reach a larger audience.
