These articles are submitted as a pair of commentaries focused on controversial scientific and medical issues in dermatology, rather than political ones. A single editor will handle the pair. Authors on the opposing articles should not be the same, but a group of authors may divide the topic and write opposing sides. Articles about non-medical topics without relevance to the clinical practice of dermatology will not be considered. Examples of published controversies articles include surgical vs medical management of hidradenitis suppurativa and platelet rich plasma for androgenetic alopecia. Future topics could include choices between drug classes, such as JAKs vs monoclonals for atopic dermatitis, and IL17 vs IL23 for psoriasis.
Prior to potential submission into Editorial Manager, authors must submit a set of proposal forms for review by the JAAD Controversies Special Editor and their workgroup. The proposal form can be found here.
Separate forms are required for the pro side and the con side. The outline and information contained on each form should be pertinent to that side of the argument only. Completed proposal forms should be emailed to jaad@aad.org. Authors of accepted proposal topics will be invited to submit the articles into Editorial Manager for peer review and potential publication. The approved version of the proposal forms should be uploaded (as supplemental material) with the original manuscript into Editorial Manager. Submissions without the approved proposal form will be returned to authors.
Each manuscript is limited to 500 words, 2 images, and 5 references. Supplemental material, including tables of supporting data, may be hosted on Mendeley.
